Senior pastor job description 

The Senior Pastor will serve as Head of Staff, with responsibility to Marietta Community Church (MCC), its Session, and the broader Marietta and Cobb County community. As the senior member of the staff, the Senior Pastor will be responsible to exercise pastoral as well as administrative leadership to the church.

The successful candidate will be a committed follower of Christ, an engaging, inspiring, visionary leader with a demonstrated ability to mobilize believers to advance the Kingdom of God.
Qualifications:

- Deep Biblical knowledge with the ability and desire to effectively communicate the Gospel and its application in everyday life
- Passion for Christ and His people
- Demonstrated leadership building innovative ministries that grow the Kingdom of God
- Proven ability to lead and motivate others (staff and congregation) to follow and advance God’s vision for the Church
- Passionate about advancing the mission of MCC to be: “An Intergenerational Community Connecting People to Jesus Christ”
- Reformed theological alignment and adherence with the ECO Essential Tenets and polity
- Ordained in or able to be ordained in ECO
- Master of Divinity or equivalent from an accredited theological seminary

Responsibilities:

Worship and Preaching
- Plan, shape and coordinate the worship services for the church, including special services, partnering with the Director of Worship
- Preach and teach the Word of God, leading the congregation to personal faith in Christ, to repentance, spiritual growth, service and evangelism through biblically-grounded sermons and teaching
- Administer the Sacraments on a regular basis
- Perform baptisms, weddings, and funerals, as requested by members of the church

Spiritual Formation
- Work with the Community Engagement Team on member assimilation processes including preparing congregants for membership in the church as Covenant Partners
- Provide leadership to the development of rich adult discipleship opportunities (small groups, Sunday school, etc.) that lead to a deeper knowledge of the Lord
- Support the children and youth ministry staff and volunteers to ensure the next generations are taught a Scriptural foundation in an age appropriate manner

Church Leadership
- Invest in and develop lay leaders for the church (Elders, Deacons and volunteers)
- Provide for the training and preparation of Elders and Deacons to effectively serve the body of Christ
- Serve as Moderator of the Session, ensuring the work of the Session is completed in a timely and efficient manner while continuing to strengthen its leadership, organization and effectiveness in ministry
- Prayerfully develop clear, actionable and forward thinking strategies that advance the mission of the Church both near and long term
- Regularly assess the current ministries of the church in conjunction with the Session and Staff
- Manage change, assess progress and make recommendations to the Session

Staff Leadership
- Guide and invest in the spiritual development of the staff
- Train, equip, empower and release the staff team to do ministry
- Oversee the work of the staff to ensure a strong, unified and effective team
- Provide staff with regular feedback on areas of strength and need for improvement
- Recommend staff additions and staff terminations to the Administration Committee
- Regularly consult with the Administration Committee and Session to discuss individual concerns, struggles, requests and joys of this position

Engagement
- Ensure processes and people are in place to care for the congregation through difficult times
- Be present at key church events outside of Sunday mornings
- Participate with the Presbytery to ensure the Session learns from, supports and is engaging with other ECO congregations
- Connect with and build relationships in the community with the leadership of other churches and local organizations with a focus on opportunities for partnership and mutual encouragement
